Cannon Soldier

Cannon Soldier was originally released as part of the Metal Raiders set, the second expansion of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in Western territories, following the initial release of Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon. The card is based on the OCG equivalent from the Japanese Starter Box and subsequent Metal Raiders booster packs, which were designed to capitalize on the early popularity of the anime and manga series by introducing a broader range of effect monsters into the TCG meta.

The artwork features an industrial, mechanical design characteristic of the early machine-type monsters in the game. Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, oversaw the conceptual development of the game's initial card pool, focusing on high-fantasy and mechanical aesthetics. Cannon Soldier earned notoriety in competitive play for its ability to tribute monsters to inflict direct damage, a mechanic that became central to various turn-based strategies and eventually led to the card being restricted or banned in multiple competitive formats over the years.
