Provenance

Where it came from

Damage Gate was released in 2010 as part of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game expansion set The Shining Darkness. The set was heavily influenced by the Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's animated series, specifically focusing on the Synchro Summoning mechanic and the conflict involving the Dark Signers. As a Normal Trap card, Damage Gate was designed to provide players with a defensive recovery option, allowing them to special summon a monster from their graveyard when they take effect damage.

The card's artwork features a dramatic, portal-like aesthetic consistent with the dark, mystical themes of the 5D's era. It was developed by Konami’s design team to bridge the gap between reactive gameplay and graveyard recursion, a strategy that saw varying degrees of competitive relevance upon its introduction. While not a cornerstone of meta-defining decks, it remains a recognizable piece of the mid-2010s card pool for collectors who focus on the era's trap card variety.
