Grisaille Prison was released in the Shadow Specters booster set in 2013, a period in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game defined by the rise of rank-based Xyz summoning strategies. As a normal trap card, it was designed to disrupt opponents by imposing a restrictive tax on the ability to summon monsters, specifically locking players out of special summons unless they were of a specific level or rank.
