Where it came from
Knightmare Gryphon was introduced in the 2018 Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game expansion Flames of Destruction. As a Link-Monster, it belongs to the Knightmare archetype, a group of corrupted, high-tech creatures designed to showcase the Link summoning mechanic introduced during the VRAINS era. The set marked a shift toward aggressive, board-controlling playstyles that relied heavily on these monsters to disrupt opponent strategies.
The visual design of the Knightmare monsters, including Gryphon, draws from surrealist, biomechanical aesthetics characterized by dark, metallic armor and twisted, demonic features. These illustrations were created to convey a sense of corrupted power and tactical utility. Upon its release, Knightmare Gryphon was widely recognized by the competitive community for its unique ability to restrict special summoned monsters, establishing itself as a staple of the meta at the time.
