Provenance

Where it came from

Mask of Darkness was introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in the Metal Raiders booster set, which was released internationally in 2002. As one of the early sets in the game's history, Metal Raiders expanded upon the foundation established by Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon, introducing a wider array of effect monsters and trap support to a growing player base.

The card features an illustration characteristic of the early Konami aesthetic, leaning into the darker, macabre fantasy themes common in the franchise's origins. Designed as a flip effect monster, it was intended to offer players utility by retrieving trap cards from the graveyard, a tactical mechanic that reflected the burgeoning strategic complexity of the game during its initial years.
