Where it came from
Mask of Darkness was first introduced to the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in the 2002 Metal Raiders expansion. As one of the earliest sets released internationally, Metal Raiders was instrumental in establishing the game's competitive foundation by introducing staple Trap cards and complex effect monsters that expanded beyond simple beatdown strategies.
The card features an illustration by Kazuki Takahashi, the creator of the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, whose aesthetic defined the series' early dark fantasy tone. Known for its ability to recycle powerful Trap cards from the graveyard, the card became a tactical fixture for players utilizing control-oriented decks, maintaining relevance through multiple reprints as a reliable defensive utility.
