Provenance

Where it came from

Mask of Darkness was introduced to the North American market in 2002 as part of the Metal Raiders booster set, the second expansion for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Following the success of the Legend of Blue Eyes White Dragon, Konami utilized Metal Raiders to expand the strategic depth of the game by introducing more effect-based monsters and utility cards to the meta-game.

The card features artwork consistent with the dark, supernatural aesthetic favored by designer Kazuki Takahashi during the early development of the franchise. As an effect monster, it provided players with a reliable method for recycling trap cards from the graveyard to the field, making it a staple for control-oriented decks during the game's formative years in the competitive circuit.
