Provenance

Where it came from

The Nekroz of Gungnir was originally introduced as part of the Secret Forces booster set in 2015 before appearing as a Secret Rare in the 2015 Mega-Tin Mega Pack. It represents a key component of the Nekroz archetype, a theme centered on powerful warriors who wear the armor of defeated monsters from the Duel Terminal storyline. The design utilizes a distinctive aesthetic that blends traditional fantasy armor with the spirits of legendary Synchro Monsters, specifically honoring the ice dragon Gungnir, Dragon of the Ice Barrier.

The card was designed to facilitate the complex mechanics of the Nekroz deck, which utilized ritual summoning to gain tactical advantages rather than purely aggressive field presence. The artwork, illustrated to evoke a cold and precise lethality, was met with significant interest by competitive players who valued the card for its protective effects and its synergy with the broader Nekroz engine. Within the context of the game's evolving meta at the time, the card was regarded as an essential utility piece for those navigating high-level tournaments.
