Otohime

Otohime was introduced as part of the Legacy of Darkness expansion set, released in North America in 2003 as the fourth major core booster set for the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game. Drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore, the card depicts the legendary princess of the Dragon Palace, Otohime, who is said to rule the underwater kingdom of Ryūgū-jō. The card was designed to reflect her mythic ability to influence those around her, translating this into a mechanics-heavy effect that forces a change in the battle positions of opposing monsters.

The artwork and conceptualization align with the distinct aesthetic of early-era Konami card design, which frequently integrated figures from historical and mythological traditions into the game's roster. As a Super Rare card within the Legacy of Darkness set, it became a notable piece for collectors focusing on the foundational expansions of the game. While it saw limited competitive play compared to more aggressive monster cards of the era, it remains a recognized example of the game's deep-seated reliance on cross-cultural mythological iconography.
