Overlay Capture

Overlay Capture was released in the 2013 booster set Number Hunters, a specialized expansion designed to support the Xyz Monster mechanics introduced in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal era. This set was notable for its inclusion of various 'Number' monsters and support cards that focused on the interaction between Xyz materials and field control. The card was conceptualized as a tactical tool to disrupt opponent strategies by preventing the activation of monster effects, reflecting the broader design philosophy of that period which emphasized highly reactive, trap-like Spell card interactions.

The card’s artwork and design are consistent with the aesthetic of the Zexal series, characterized by futuristic, geometric motifs and high-contrast digital overlays. Illustrated by the creative team at Konami, the piece aims to visually represent the concept of 'capturing' or freezing the overlay units—the material tokens attached to Xyz monsters. Upon its release, it was well-received by players seeking budget-friendly disruption options, though its utility remained niche compared to more versatile staples available at the time.
