Provenance

Where it came from

The Shield & Sword spell card was released in the Starter Deck: Joey in 2002, a product designed to mirror the deck composition of Joey Wheeler, a central character in the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime. This deck served as an accessible entry point for new players during the initial surge of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game in North America, offering fans a way to replicate the strategies seen on screen.

The card features an effect that swaps the attack and defense values of all face-up monsters on the field. Mechanically, this reflects the game's early focus on shifting battle dynamics and punishing defensive playstyles. While the artwork and concept are rooted in classic fantasy tropes, the card is a functional piece of the early TCG meta, illustrating the game's original design intent of prioritizing high-risk, high-reward tactical exchanges.
