Tragoedia was originally released in the 2009 set Crimson Crisis, later appearing as a common card in the 2017 Structure Deck: Cyberse Link. As a Level 10 Effect Monster, it represents a recurring archetype of cards designed to punish opponents for aggressive play by allowing the owner to special summon it from the hand whenever they take battle damage. Its thematic design reflects the darker aesthetic of early Yu-Gi-Oh! monster cards, focusing on a multi-faced, mask-like appearance that embodies the concept of tragedy.

The card was designed to offer players a defensive utility tool that scales in power based on the cards in one's hand.
