Provenance

Where it came from

Veil of Darkness was originally released in the 2005 Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game set Shadow of Infinity. Its design reflects the gothic, dark-themed aesthetic popular during the GX era, intended to support Dark-Attribute monsters by granting players additional draw power at the cost of potential self-damage. The card represents a strategic high-risk, high-reward mechanic that characterizes the darker archetypes of the franchise.

This specific iteration, SS05-ENA25, was reprinted in the 2021 Speed Duel Starter Decks: Twisted Nightmares. The Speed Duel format was created by Konami to offer a streamlined, faster-paced version of the traditional game, designed specifically for accessibility and smaller deck sizes. By including this classic effect in a starter deck, the developers aimed to introduce nostalgic mechanics to new players while maintaining the thematic consistency of a deck centered around supernatural and shadowy entities.
