Yata-Garasu

Yata-Garasu debuted in the Legacy of Darkness expansion set, released in North America in 2003. As a spiritual figure from Japanese mythology representing the three-legged crow that guides souls, the card was integrated into the game as a powerful tool for control strategies. Its game-ending effect, which prevented an opponent from drawing cards after inflicting battle damage, quickly cemented its status as one of the most feared and influential cards in the early competitive meta.

The design of the card reflects the aesthetic of Kazuki Takahashi’s original vision for the Yu-Gi-Oh! trading card game, blending folklore with the mechanical complexity of the game's evolving ruleset. Because of its ability to single-handedly lock an opponent out of the game, it was eventually placed on the official forbidden list, turning it into a rare and significant piece of gaming history that represents an era of rapid power creep in the hobby.
