Synopsis

It's been almost 100 years since the "salaryman" type of office worker first appeared in Japan back in the 1920s.

As our society faces a major turning point, SmartHR decided to create a brand film to reflect upon how work styles have changed with time over the past century.

We hope that by looking back on history, we inspire people to think about how they want to work going forward.

Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2021 by the studio Gyorai Eizou, 100 Years of Work in Japan is an original net animation that serves as a documentary-style tribute to the evolution of Japanese industry and labor practices over the previous century. The project was commissioned to celebrate the centennial of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, aiming to encapsulate the country's rapid transition from traditional craftsmanship to high-tech manufacturing and digital innovation.

The animation utilizes a distinct visual language characterized by clean, stylized character designs and a fast-paced narrative flow intended to appeal to contemporary digital audiences. By synthesizing historical archival imagery with Gyorai Eizou’s signature modern animation techniques, the piece sought to bridge the gap between older generations who witnessed this industrial shift and younger viewers, receiving moderate critical praise for its concise storytelling and effective use of compressed visual history.
