Where it came from
The 5-Oku-nen Button Part 2, released by Studio Sota in 2024, continues the adaptation of the popular web manga by Tomohiro Sugie. The series follows the existential and philosophical dilemmas of a group of teenagers who encounter a button that offers a billion yen in exchange for spending five hundred million years in a void of nothingness. This installment builds upon the dark humor and minimalist art style of its source material, focusing on the psychological impact of sensory deprivation and the long-term consequences of such a Faustian bargain.
The character designs and animation approach reflect the series' roots as a surrealist web comic, prioritizing stark visuals to emphasize the isolation experienced by the protagonists. Studio Sota utilized a restrained aesthetic to mirror the monotony of the void, a deliberate choice intended to force viewers to sit with the unsettling duration of the characters' confinement. The series has been received as a contemplative entry in the sci-fi subgenre, praised for its willingness to explore complex temporal paradoxes through a dry, minimalist lens.
