6-chan ga Nekoronde

6-chan ga Nekoronde, which translates to 'Channel 6 is Lying Down,' was a short-lived but memorable broadcast interstitial series produced by NHK. The program featured an anthropomorphic representation of the station's sixth channel, depicted as a relaxed character, designed to fill gaps in the broadcast schedule with a sense of playful, low-stakes comfort that contrasted with the more formal tone of traditional public television.

The character design leaned into the minimalist aesthetic typical of late-20th-century Japanese broadcast design, prioritizing simplicity and recognizability. It was intended to serve as a calming presence for viewers during transitional periods. While it never achieved the status of a long-term mascot, the series is fondly remembered by viewers of the era for its whimsical animation style and its role in humanizing the technical experience of channel navigation.
