Where it came from
The 6♥Princess project originated from the visionary mind of Japanese artist Takashi Murakami, who directed this ambitious animation initiative through his studio, Poncotan. Conceived as a vibrant, subversive take on the 'magical girl' subgenre of anime, the project was designed to explore themes of consumer culture and artistic identity. It debuted in the early 2010s as a high-concept multimedia endeavor, utilizing an aesthetic that blended traditional Japanese animation styles with Murakami’s signature Superflat artistic philosophy.
The character design and visual language of 6♥Princess were crafted to be hyper-stylized, featuring exaggerated proportions and kaleidoscopic color palettes that mirrored Murakami’s broader gallery works. Upon its release, the project garnered significant attention for its distinct departure from mainstream studio norms, positioning itself as a deliberate critique of the commercialization of youth-oriented media. While polarizing, the series remains a notable artifact of the intersection between contemporary fine art and commercial Japanese animation culture.
