Ann seems like a normal girl, but secretly she’s obsessed with the “local super heroines” who perform in shows that promote regional products and tourist sites across Japan. So when Ann is approached by Mikan to put on a private heroine show for Mikan’s younger sister, Ann jumps at the chance to live out her fantasies. And when their student council president, Misaki, sees the two girls rehearsing, she realizes that a local superhero show might be the way to rescue their town from serious financial jeopardy! But can they recruit all the girls and resources needed in the short time before the bills come due?

Where it came from
Action Heroine Cheer Fruits was produced by Studio diomedéa and aired in 2017 as a unique entry in the sub-genre of idol-themed anime. The series was conceptualized as a multimedia project designed to revitalize a fictional town by utilizing local hero shows, blending the concepts of live-action stunt performance with the idol industry. This narrative choice was intended to showcase the dedication required for community-based entertainment, drawing inspiration from regional Japanese hero troupes that perform at malls and local parks.
The character designs and animation direction focused on emphasizing the youthful energy and evolving chemistry of the core cast. While the series received moderate critical attention for its earnest depiction of regional revitalization, it is primarily recognized by fans of the studio’s niche projects for its lighthearted aesthetic and the technical effort required to animate the theatrical combat segments. It remains a representative example of how mid-2010s anime studios experimented with mixing conventional performance-based tropes with the aesthetics of tokusatsu-style action.
