Where it came from
Afro Samurai was produced in 2007 by the Japanese animation studio GONZO. The series originated as a manga created by Takashi Okazaki, who blended traditional samurai tropes with hip-hop culture and futuristic, post-apocalyptic settings. The studio aimed to create a visually striking aesthetic that bridged the gap between anime stylization and Western urban sensibilities, supported by a distinct soundtrack curated by RZA of the Wu-Tang Clan.
The series received significant attention for its high-contrast, stylized animation and its unconventional fusion of genres. By centering a Black protagonist in a narrative heavily steeped in classic jidaigeki sword-fighting motifs, it carved out a unique space within the mid-2000s anime landscape. While its aesthetic was divisive for some purists, the project was broadly praised for its technical ambition and for the central vocal performance provided by Samuel L. Jackson, which helped secure its status as a notable crossover hit.
