AFTERLOST

Afterlost, known in Japan as Shoumetsu Toshi, was produced by the acclaimed studio Madhouse and released in 2019. It serves as an anime adaptation of the mobile game developed by Wright Flyer Studios, which centers on a courier named Takuya and a girl named Yuki who is the sole survivor of a mysterious event that erased a city from the map. The transition from a puzzle-based RPG to an animated narrative was intended to expand the emotional depth of the game's core mystery, focusing on the bond between the two leads as they navigate the aftermath of the disappearance.

The production sought to balance the game's atmospheric, melancholic aesthetic with traditional shonen-style action sequences. While the series was highly anticipated by the existing fanbase of the mobile game, it received a mixed critical reception. Critics noted that the compressed storytelling required to adapt a lengthy game narrative into a twelve-episode format made the pacing feel uneven, though the visual identity established by Madhouse remained a point of praise for its fidelity to the original game's distinctive art style.
