Afro Samurai: Resurrection

Afro Samurai: Resurrection was produced in 2009 by Studio GONZO as a direct sequel to the highly successful 2007 miniseries adaptation of Takashi Okazaki’s manga. The project was conceived to expand upon the stylized, hip-hop-infused aesthetic that defined the original series, blending traditional Japanese jidaigeki themes with contemporary urban culture and a distinct, high-contrast visual palette. Directed by Fuminori Kizaki, the film aimed to elevate the technical production values of the original run while maintaining the signature rhythmic intensity that characterized the franchise's identity.

The film’s design centers on the gritty, post-apocalyptic fusion of feudal Japan and futuristic technology, a hallmark of Okazaki’s work. Production benefited from a collaboration with the RZA, who returned to score the film, ensuring the musical landscape remained central to the narrative’s pacing.
