Ai Shoujo Pollyanna Story

Ai Shoujo Pollyanna Story was produced by Nippon Animation in 1986 as part of the studio's long-running World Masterpiece Theater series. This series was known for adapting classic Western children's literature into high-quality anime, aimed at fostering themes of resilience and kindness in young viewers. The production sought to faithfully capture the emotional arc of Eleanor H. Porter’s original 1913 novel, focusing on the titular protagonist's relentless optimism in the face of hardship.

The character designs were handled by Hisashi Nishizawa, who leaned into the distinct soft, emotive aesthetic that defined the studio's mid-eighties output. By emphasizing wide-eyed expressions and a quaint, turn-of-the-century aesthetic, the series aimed to make the source material accessible to a modern Japanese television audience. Upon its release, it was well-received for its consistent storytelling quality and became a nostalgic touchstone for many who grew up during that era of Japanese animation.
