Air Master

Air Master was produced by Toei Animation and aired in 2003, adapted from the long-running manga series by Yokusaru Shibata. The story centers on Maki Aikawa, a former gymnast who transitions her extraordinary physical abilities into the underground street fighting circuit, where she earns the titular nickname. The series emerged during a period when Toei was exploring stylized, high-action shonen narratives, aiming to translate Shibata's dynamic and unconventional panel layouts into an animated format.

The series is noted for its distinctive visual direction by Daisuke Nishio, who leaned into surreal humor and exaggerated, fluid character animation rather than adhering to a strictly realistic aesthetic. While the anime was initially noted for its departure from standard martial arts tropes, it eventually garnered a cult following for its unconventional pacing and eccentric cast of characters. Over time, it has been recognized as a singular entry in the early 2000s animation landscape, distinct for its blend of extreme violence and offbeat character-driven comedy.
