Air in Summer

Air in Summer, released in 2005, serves as a two-episode special concluding the anime adaptation of the visual novel Air by Key. Produced by Kyoto Animation, this special was created to provide a more definitive and expanded resolution to the narrative arcs established in the main television series, which had aired earlier that same year. It was released amidst the height of Kyoto Animation's collaboration with Key, a period that solidified the studio's reputation for high-quality, emotionally resonant character animation.

The visual direction and character designs, overseen by Tomoe Aratani based on Itaru Hinoue’s original concepts, aim to capture the ethereal, melancholic atmosphere synonymous with the source material. By focusing on the perspectives of the main characters beyond the events of the series finale, the special was crafted to offer a cathartic experience for fans of the franchise. It was received as a respectful accompaniment to the series, maintaining the studio's established aesthetic standards while successfully translating the complex emotional beats of the visual novel format into a linear screen narrative.
