Synopsis

A TV show that is so unclear to whom and where it is broadcast. A strange room where the recording and editing is taking place. A middle-aged gentleman like a wax figure sits on a turntable and grabs the microphone as the director signals him to do so. A reading about the mysterious genre "Ficfyon" has begun. 'What the heck did we not have time for?' The monologue of a man sitting in the audience and continuing to talk about his story will soon move into Ficfyon prophecies about the 2000s.

Provenance

Where it came from

Airs (1982) is a Japanese animated film directed by Osamu Dezaki, a prominent figure in the medium known for his stylized approach to dramatic storytelling. The production emerged from the thriving era of the early 1980s, a period marked by significant experimentation in the Japanese film industry as studios sought to adapt complex narratives for the screen with a growing emphasis on cinematic atmosphere and character-driven stakes.

The film represents a collaborative effort reflective of the visual techniques popularized by Dezaki, such as his signature 'postcard memories' and deliberate use of dramatic lighting to convey internal emotional states. Upon its release, it was appreciated by enthusiasts of independent animation for its moody, contemplative tone and the distinct aesthetic influence of its artistic director, fitting into the wider landscape of experimental animation that prioritized mood and stylistic consistency over traditional mainstream pacing.
