Alice In Voodooland

Alice in Voodooland emerged as a distinctive entry in the alternative comic and underground illustration scene during the late 20th century, a period marked by a renewed interest in surrealist dark fantasy. Created by artist and author Rick Geary, the work reimagines the classic Lewis Carroll narrative through a lens of macabre, gothic, and occult-inspired aesthetics. It was produced to subvert the innocence of the source material, positioning Alice within a landscape defined by folk-horror tropes rather than the whimsical nonsense of the Victorian original.

The design of the work relies heavily on Geary’s signature cross-hatching style, which lends a sense of antiquated gloom and clinical precision to the bizarre subject matter. By blending Victorian sensibilities with unsettling, surrealist imagery, the work functions as a stylistic commentary on the darker, underlying anxieties present in children's literature. Upon its release, it was noted primarily for its technical craftsmanship and its commitment to the aesthetic conventions of the dark underground press, garnering a cult following among aficionados of gothic graphic narratives.
