Alice in Wonderland

Produced in 1983, this adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic literature was a collaborative effort between the Japanese studio Nippon Animation and West German broadcasters. The series emerged during a period when international co-productions were becoming a staple for children's television, aiming to bring Western literary staples to a global audience through the distinct, detailed aesthetic of Japanese cel animation.

The production sought to balance the surreal, episodic nature of Carroll's original text with the narrative structure required for a fifty-two-episode television run. While the visual direction aimed for a whimsical and colorful interpretation, the series is noted for its faithful, albeit softened, tone compared to darker adaptations, finding a dedicated reception among families and viewers who appreciated its distinct character designs and melodic atmosphere.
