Where it came from
Released in 2008 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the landmark Super Dimension Fortress Macross franchise, this promotional short served as a retrospective showcase of the series' signature variable fighter designs. Produced by Satelight, the animation focuses on the evolution and mechanical intricacies of the Valkyrie units, positioning them as the centerpiece of the series' cultural legacy. It functions as both a technical tribute to Shoji Kawamori’s original mecha concepts and a celebration for long-time fans of the space opera saga.
The visual direction emphasizes the transformation sequences that defined the series, utilizing updated digital techniques to render the iconic VF-1 and its successors. By revisiting these designs with 25th-anniversary production standards, the creators aimed to highlight the enduring appeal of the transforming jet concept that Kawamori pioneered. Upon its release, it was received as a nostalgic technical demonstration, praised by the fan community for its commitment to the mechanical fidelity and aesthetic history that established Macross as a cornerstone of the mecha genre.
