Where it came from
Released in 2008 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the landmark Super Dimension Fortress Macross franchise, this short film served as a technical showcase for the evolution of the series' signature variable fighter designs. Produced by Satelight, it focuses on the internal mechanics and flight capabilities of the VF series, moving away from traditional narrative storytelling to highlight the industrial artistry that defined the franchise since its 1982 debut.
The visual design prioritizes high-fidelity 3D modeling to pay homage to the original mechanical designs of Shoji Kawamori. By depicting the VF-0 and subsequent iterations in a simulated air show environment, the production sought to bridge the gap between nostalgic line art and modern digital animation aesthetics. It was received by fans as a celebratory technical exercise, intended primarily to demonstrate the precision and longevity of the series' iconic transformable aircraft.
