Where it came from
Altered Carbon: Resleeved was released in 2020 as a spin-off of the Netflix live-action series, which was itself based on the 2002 cyberpunk novel by Richard K. Morgan. Produced by the studio Anima, this original net animation (ONA) serves as a prequel, exploring the backstory of the protagonist Takeshi Kovacs before the events of the primary series. The project was conceived to leverage the expanding world-building of the franchise while utilizing the distinct stylistic possibilities of 3D computer-generated imagery.
The animation was directed by Takeru Nakajima and Yoshiyuki Okada, who sought to blend the grit of noir detective fiction with the high-octane aesthetics of Japanese cyberpunk. By choosing a cel-shaded CGI approach, the creative team aimed to maintain a bridge between the live-action aesthetic and the medium of anime. Upon release, it was received as a stylistic departure that leaned heavily into Yakuza-inspired themes and martial arts action, broadening the scope of the Altered Carbon universe for a global audience.
