Hikari Kohinata and Futaba Ooki have together found joy in many things through scuba diving and the most everyday of events. Hikari was born and brought up in a small oceanside town on Izu, and Futaba moved there from Tokyo, but the two polar opposites met at Yumegaoka High and instantly hit it off. The always-reserved Futaba found her perfect foil in the cheery and optimistic Hikari, and their friendship gave her the courage to take the first step and experience many of the smaller joys in life. She also took the Open Water Diver exam and passed, and now she has her sights set on the Advanced Open Water Diver certification.

Where it came from
Amanchu! ~Advance~ was released in 2018 as the second season of the anime adaptation of Kozue Amano’s slice-of-life manga series. Produced by studio J.C.Staff, the series continues the story of Hikari Kohinata and Futaba Oki as they navigate their friendship and their shared passion for scuba diving in the coastal town of Ito. The production aimed to maintain the tranquil, atmospheric aesthetic that defined the first season, focusing on the gentle pacing and emotional growth central to Amano’s original storytelling.
The series design transition moved the project from the director pairing of the first season to a new creative leadership, with Kiyoko Sayama directing and serving as the primary storyboard artist. This iteration of the show is noted for its dreamlike visual quality and focus on the personal chemistry between the protagonists. While the transition in tone compared to the first season drew varied responses from the existing fanbase, the series remains recognized for its commitment to a contemplative, character-driven narrative within the school-life genre.
