Hikari Kohinata is an overwhelmingly cheerful and outgoing 15-year-old girl who has spent all her life in a small and beautiful seaside town on the Izu peninsula. On the first day of high school, she meets Futaba Oki, a slightly introverted girl who has just moved from Tokyo. Before she knows it, Futaba gets dragged along into Hikari's passion for scuba diving. And from there, Futaba gradually starts to come out of her shell, and learns how to take challenges and dive into the ocean of life.

Where it came from
Amanchu! was produced by studio J.C.Staff and premiered in 2016 as an adaptation of the long-running manga series by Kozue Amano, who is best known for her celebrated work on Aria. The series follows the friendship between the shy Futaba Oki and the free-spirited Hikari Kohinata as they join their school's diving club in a seaside town. The adaptation aimed to capture the meditative, gentle atmosphere of Amano's original manga, focusing on the beauty of the ocean and the nuances of adolescent companionship.
The production was directed by Junichi Sato and Kenichi Kasai, a team chosen for their experience in creating immersive, character-driven narratives. The visual style emphasized a soft, ethereal palette designed to reflect the tranquility of the protagonist's underwater excursions. Upon release, the series was well-received by audiences who appreciated its patient pacing and dedication to the 'iyashikei' or healing genre, which prioritizes mood and character development over high-stakes conflict.
