Where it came from
The Angel Sanctuary OVA, released in 2000 by Bandai Visual, serves as an adaptation of the dark fantasy manga series created by Kaori Yuki. Originally serialized in Hana to Yume, the source material was celebrated for its intricate, gothic aesthetic and complex theological themes involving fallen angels and forbidden romance. The production aimed to condense a massive, sprawling narrative into a three-episode format, a creative choice that resulted in a visually dense but narrative-heavy experience.
The design of the OVA was heavily influenced by Yuki's ornate, Baroque-inspired character art, which challenged the animation studios of the time to replicate her signature detailed line work. While the series maintains a dedicated cult following for its haunting soundtrack and aesthetic ambition, it remains a contentious entry among fans of the manga, primarily due to the significant condensation of the plot required by the limited run time.
