Angel Tales

Angel Tales, known in Japan as Otogi Story Tenshi no Shippo, debuted in 2001 as a television anime series produced by Lantis. The project originated as part of a multimedia initiative aimed at blending character-driven storytelling with the idol culture prevalent in the early 2000s, featuring twelve lead characters based on the animals of the Chinese zodiac. The series follows a protagonist who gains the assistance of these angelic guardian spirits, utilizing a lighthearted, fantasy-oriented narrative structure that was characteristic of the era's 'moe' animation trends.

The character designs were overseen by prominent artists within the industry, intended to cultivate a distinct visual identity for each of the twelve zodiac representations. By emphasizing diverse personality types and soft, approachable aesthetics, the production team sought to appeal to a broad audience of anime fans and music collectors alike. While the series received a modest reception upon its initial broadcast, it remains a notable example of the transition toward highly franchised, character-centric anime productions that flourished during the early twenty-first century.
