Where it came from
Angels in the Court was produced by NuTech Digital in 2000 as a direct-to-video original video animation. The project emerged during a period when smaller animation studios were experimenting with niche sports-themed narratives, often blending traditional character-driven drama with stylized action sequences to appeal to the growing domestic and international anime markets of the late nineties and early two-thousands.
The production sought to capitalize on the popularity of sports-genre media by centering the narrative on the high-stakes environment of basketball. While the creative team aimed for a dynamic aesthetic that mirrored the energy of the court, the project is characterized by the limited resources common to independent studio works of that era. Upon its release, it garnered interest primarily among collectors of obscure nineties and early-millennium OVA titles rather than mainstream critics.
