There's something very wrong with the apartment that young university student Rin has rented, and it's more than just the terrible condition that it's in. There's something grim and foreboding about the place… an omnipresent atmosphere of dread that makes Rin feel as though she's constantly being watched by a thousand unblinking eyes.
And the surrounding area isn't any better. Between sinister street people on strange missions, bizarre cults and rumors of a serial killer, it might seem that staying locked in behind closed doors would be the safest thing to do. But what if the real danger is already inside? There's no escape for Rin or her secrets now, and the only thing more terrifying than the horrific events that take place in her apartment are the nightmarish entities that conduct them!

Where it came from
Aragne: Sign of Vermillion is a 2018 independent feature-length anime film conceived, written, directed, and animated almost entirely by Sakasaka Saku. Created over the course of several years, the project stands as a testament to the potential of solo-artist animation, utilizing a distinct, often unsettling aesthetic that relies on dark, layered textures and psychological tension to tell its story. The film follows a student who moves into a mysterious apartment complex, a setting designed to evoke feelings of claustrophobia and existential dread as she uncovers local urban legends.
The film emerged from the Japanese indie animation scene, drawing comparisons to avant-garde works due to its unconventional narrative structure and eerie visual language. While its limited budget resulted in a starkly minimalist animation style that polarized mainstream critics, it garnered a devoted cult following. Enthusiasts often point to Saku's singular vision and the film's refusal to adhere to traditional commercial anime tropes as its defining strengths, securing its place as a notable entry in modern independent dark fantasy cinema.
