Armored Trooper Votoms: Case; Irvine

Released in 2010 as part of the Armored Trooper Votoms project, Case; Irvine serves as a side-story within the broader Votoms universe. Produced by Sunrise and directed by Toshikazu Hazano, the OVA was conceived to breathe new life into the gritty, realistic military science fiction franchise that first debuted in the early 1980s. The production aimed to maintain the series' signature 'Real Robot' aesthetic, emphasizing the mechanical weight and industrial modularity of the Scopedog units while exploring a self-contained narrative separate from the primary story of Chirico Cuvie.

The character design for Case; Irvine was handled by Norio Shioyama, a long-time collaborator on the Votoms franchise who sought to balance the familiar aesthetic of the original show with updated animation standards. The project was released during a minor resurgence of interest in the series, reflecting the enduring appeal of Ryosuke Takahashi’s original vision. Critical reception focused on its successful preservation of the franchise's melancholic atmosphere, though it was largely received by the established fanbase as a respectful, if modest, expansion of the series lore.
