Armored Trooper Votoms: Chirico's Return

Armored Trooper Votoms: Chirico's Return was produced by Sunrise in 2011 as a direct sequel to the long-running Votoms franchise, which began in the early 1980s. The project was conceived to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Ryosuke Takahashi’s gritty, realistic mecha series. It functions as a contemplative epilogue, reuniting the protagonist, Chirico Cuvie, with his companion Fyana in a narrative that emphasizes the melancholy and existential weight characteristic of the original series.

The production sought to blend the classic aesthetic of 1980s hard science fiction with refined digital animation techniques. Ryosuke Takahashi returned as director to ensure the atmosphere remained grounded, focusing on the tactical, grounded combat of the Scopedog units rather than the high-fantasy mechanics common in other mecha titles. Upon its release, it was received as a respectful, character-driven conclusion that provided fans with a sense of finality to the nomadic life of its central figure.
