After armored trooper pilot Chirico Cuvie is given orders to transfer to Planet Odon, he and all of the other new recruits are sent into a simulated battle to test their abilities. However, this 'simulated battle' turns out to be a serious fight to eliminate those without the necessary skills. Chirico survives along with just three others, despite the fact that he fought while injured. It soon becomes apparent that this is not the first time he has survived against incredible odds, a fact that Colonel Peruzen wishes to exploit. But is Chirico truly immortal?

Where it came from
Released in 1988, Armored Trooper Votoms: Origin of Ambition serves as a prequel to the original 1983 television series. Directed and written by Ryosuke Takahashi, this OVA was produced by Sunrise to delve into the earlier days of the Hundred Year War and the mysterious past of the protagonist, Chirico Cuvie. It was crafted during a period when the studio sought to revisit the gritty, grounded realism that defined the Votoms universe, focusing on the tactical deployment of ATs (Armored Troopers) and the cynical nature of interstellar conflict.
The visual design retains the hallmark industrial aesthetic established by Kunio Okawara, whose AT designs were celebrated for their functional, weathered appearance rather than the idealized forms seen in contemporary robot anime. The project was received by fans as a critical expansion of the Votoms mythos, offering a darker, more concentrated look at the internal politics of the Gilgamesh and Balarant factions. By stripping away some of the broader adventure elements of the series, the OVA emphasizes the bleak, procedural reality of soldiering within the franchise's established setting.
