Art of Fighting

Released in 1993 by Starchild Records, Art of Fighting is an original video animation produced to capitalize on the popularity of the SNK arcade fighting game of the same name. Directed by Hiroshi Fukutomi and produced by Studio Comet, the project aimed to translate the intense, cinematic visual style of the game—notable for being one of the first titles to feature character sprites that scaled during combat—into a narrative format. It captures the gritty, crime-ridden atmosphere of South Town, focusing on the kidnapping of Yuri Sakazaki and the subsequent quest by Ryo Sakazaki and Robert Garcia to rescue her from the clutches of the local syndicate.

The production was intended to deepen the lore of the Art of Fighting universe, leaning into the trope-heavy storytelling common in 1990s action anime. The character designs were adapted to reflect the distinct aesthetics of the game's cast, emphasizing muscular physicality and the dramatic flair of traditional martial arts cinema. Upon its release, the OVA served as a companion piece for fans of the arcade series, though it was generally regarded by critics as a standard genre exercise that prioritized action sequences and familiar character dynamics over complex narrative innovation.
