Bai Bian Zhuzhu Xia

Bai Bian Zhuzhu Xia, known internationally as Spider Riders, is a collaborative animated series that emerged from a partnership between the Canadian studio Cookie Jar Entertainment and the Japanese studio Bee Train. Released in the mid-2000s, the series was developed to bridge Western action-adventure sensibilities with the aesthetic traditions of Japanese anime, targeting a youth demographic with its high-fantasy premise of humans forming symbiotic bonds with giant, intelligent spiders.

The character design and world-building were heavily influenced by the 2004 book series of the same name by Ted Pedersen and Dirk Remmecke. The transition from print to screen aimed to capture a vibrant, expansive underground world, relying on a mix of traditional and digital animation techniques. While it achieved a dedicated cult following for its unique fusion of mecha-style combat and creature-based lore, it remains a distinct artifact of the mid-2000s period when cross-continental animation co-productions were at their most experimental.
