Where it came from
Baja and the Sea was produced in 2019 by Kyoto Animation as a follow-up to the 2017 short film Baja’s Studio. The project served as a creative venture for the studio’s internal team, centered on the titular character Baja, a dog originally designed to represent the studio’s mascot and creative spirit. This OVA was created during a period of transition for the company, intending to provide a whimsical and heartwarming narrative that showcased the studio’s renowned attention to detail in character movement and atmospheric background art.
The film was directed and illustrated by the Kyoto Animation creative team, maintaining the studio's hallmark aesthetic of vibrant colors and expressive, fluid animation. Designed to be an accessible, family-oriented piece, it was received as a gentle showcase of the studio’s technical proficiency. By focusing on the bond between the dog and his environment, the production team aimed to capture a sense of wonder, reflecting the studio's long-standing dedication to high-quality, character-driven storytelling even in their smaller-scale, experimental projects.
