Where it came from
The BanG Dream! OVA, released in 2017, serves as an extension of the franchise's inaugural anime season produced by Studio Xebec. It was created to bridge the gap between the primary series' conclusion and the ongoing growth of the multimedia project, which integrates music, voice acting, and live performance. By focusing on the members of the band Poppin'Party, the production aimed to provide fans with a lighthearted look at the characters' daily lives outside of the main narrative arcs.
The animation maintains the aesthetic established by the 2017 series, utilizing a combination of traditional animation and digital techniques characteristic of Xebec's work during that period. The project was designed to capitalize on the rising popularity of the BanG Dream! rhythm game and the associated live musical performances of the voice cast. Reception was generally aligned with the core fanbase, who viewed the OVA as a pleasant supplementary piece that reinforced the character dynamics and themes of friendship central to the property.
