Where it came from
Battle Athletes Victory ReSTART! was produced by Studio Seven and released in 2021 as a reimagining of the classic 1990s multimedia franchise Battle Athletes. The series was designed to introduce a new generation to the competitive, high-stakes universe of the Cosmic Sports Festival, shifting the tone to align with contemporary animation standards while maintaining the core premise of young athletes competing for the prestigious title of Cosmic Beauty.
The series served as a reboot rather than a direct sequel, aiming to refresh the character designs and narrative pacing of the original 90s iteration. While the project was highly anticipated by fans of the original OVA and television series, it received a mixed reception, with critics often noting the challenge of balancing the nostalgia of the source material with the updated stylistic choices preferred by modern audiences.
