Where it came from
Black Jack FINAL is a two-part original video animation series released in 2011 by Tezuka Productions to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Osamu Tezuka's professional debut. These episodes adapt two distinct stories from the original manga series, specifically designed to capture the darker, more atmospheric tone of the source material while utilizing modern digital animation techniques. The production team aimed to honor the legacy of the rogue surgeon by contrasting his medical genius against the ethical quandaries and human frailties inherent in Tezuka’s original vision.
The character design for this series was handled by Masahiro Sekiguchi, who worked to maintain the iconic aesthetic of the original manga while refining the proportions for contemporary viewers. The project was conceived as a high-quality tribute, intended to showcase the enduring relevance of the Black Jack character. Upon release, the OVA was well-received by fans of the series for its fidelity to the somber, philosophical nature of the source material and for avoiding the more lighthearted sensibilities occasionally found in earlier adaptations.
