Blade Runner: Black Out 2022

Blade Runner: Black Out 2022 was produced in 2017 as a narrative bridge between the original 1982 Blade Runner film and the 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049. Commissioned by director Denis Villeneuve, the short was crafted to explain the catastrophic 'Blackout' event mentioned in the later film—a massive electromagnetic pulse that erased digital records and devastated the ecosystem. The production sought to anchor the expanded universe in the established visual language of the franchise while providing necessary backstory for the transition between the two eras.

The project was directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, best known for Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, who utilized the animation studio CygamesPictures to execute his vision. Watanabe aimed to blend traditional anime aesthetics with the gritty, neon-soaked neo-noir atmosphere of Ridley Scott’s original world.
