Blade & Soul Specials

The Blade & Soul specials were released in 2014 as promotional accompaniments to the anime adaptation of the popular NCSoft MMORPG of the same name. Produced by studio GONZO, these episodes were designed to expand upon the world and aesthetic of the Earthen Realm, focusing on the character Alka as she navigated a narrative heavy with themes of revenge and martial arts fantasy. The production aimed to translate the game's distinctive high-fantasy visual style, characterized by intricate character designs and stylized combat, into an episodic television format.

The design and animation direction were heavily influenced by the source material's established art style, which is known for its blend of traditional wuxia elements and modern fantasy tropes. GONZO sought to maintain the fluidity of the game's combat sequences while crafting a darker, more linear story for the screen. Upon release, the series and its specials were met with mixed reception; while fans of the game appreciated the expanded lore and familiar character designs, some critics noted that the narrative pacing struggled to capture the same immersion found in the original interactive medium.
