Where it came from
Boku no Boukuugou, or My Air Raid Shelter, was produced by Shin-Ei Animation in 2005 as a special animated project. It emerged during a period when Japanese studios were increasingly utilizing animation to preserve historical memories for younger generations, specifically focusing on the civilian experience during the aerial bombings of World War II.
The production sought to balance historical gravity with the accessible visual language of a television studio known primarily for lighter fare. By grounding the narrative in the perspective of a child, the design and direction aimed to convey the psychological weight of wartime survival without relying on graphic spectacle, ultimately serving as an educational piece meant for school screenings and public awareness broadcasts.
