Where it came from
Training of the Dead was produced by studio Bones and released in 2017 as an original video animation accompanying the limited edition of the 14th volume of the My Hero Academia manga. Set between the first and second seasons of the anime, the story follows Class 1-A as they participate in a joint survival training exercise with students from Shiketsu High School, which takes a chaotic turn when a zombie outbreak simulation goes awry.
The animation was directed by Kenji Nagasaki, who maintained the high-energy, character-driven aesthetic established in the main television series. By leaning into the horror-comedy genre, the project allowed the staff to explore character interactions in a lower-stakes, standalone environment, providing fans with a bridge between the core seasonal arcs while showcasing the signature fluid action sequences Bones is known for.
